In the world of electric cars, you are limited to only a handful of high-end luxury sedans such as the Tesla Model S, the Audi e-Tron GT, the Porsche Macan, and the two newest additions to the luxury EV segment, the Lucid Air and the Mercedes-Benz EQS.
Between the three the Tesla, the Audi, and the Mercedes seem to stand out because the Taycan is more tailored towards sporty driving while the Lucid Air has just only been released to the public. Choosing between the Model S, the e-Tron GT and the EQS is mostly down to what you value the most.
The Tesla Model S is the oldest car between the two, yet it does offer more convenience. The Audi e-Tron GT is arguably the best-looking car out of the three even though it’s not nearly as popular. The Mercedes EQS is certainly the most luxurious EV money can buy these days, but it can’t match the other two in performance.
The e-Tron GT and the EQS are better cars than the Model S even though the Model S is the easiest one to live with. You should go for the EQS if you want the most comfortable and tech-savvy experience but go for the Audi if you want to enjoy a more dynamic-oriented driving experience with superior exterior design.
Tesla Model S – The pioneer of this segment – $90,000 MSRP
Gone are the days when the Model S was the most advanced car on the market because it seems to fall short when compared to the newest EV sedans out there. Even though Tesla tries its best to update the Model S and make it more luxurious and futuristic both the interior and exterior design are slowly starting to feel a tad bit dated.
Either way, the Tesla Model S is better than the other two if you want straight-line rocket missile-like performance because the 1000hp Tesla Model S Plaid edition is the second quickest serial production car in the history of the automobile.
Tesla also gains a few advantages for being able to utilize Tesla’s well-developed charging infrastructure. The range the Model S offers sits between the e-Tron GT and the EQS. The build quality and the levels of refinement are nowhere near the e-Tron and the EQS.
All in all, the Model S is still a competitive sedan, but it simply can’t match the newest EVs on the market.
Mercedes Benz EQS – The most luxurious EV on the market – $103,000 MSRP
Mercedes took some time before they released the EQS because they wanted to pack it with everything they got, and it seems like they did. The EQS comes with a myriad of futuristic technology solutions such as the extensively debated “Hyperscreen” and a bunch of clever software solutions.
The EQS is large from almost every angle which means that it’s not a sports car and Mercedes never intended it to be. It is one of the most luxurious and comfortable cars in general, not only in regards to the EV segment.
The build quality is on another level when compared to the Model S and so is the cabin isolation and the ride quality. The car also comes with a clever all-wheel-steering system which virtually shortens the car’s wheelbase in order to make it as maneuverable as possible.
The EQS also holds the current record for the highest EV-only range on a single charge by managing to do 441miles without stopping. All in all, the EQS is the best EV money can buy if you want comfort and luxury.

Audi e-Tron GT – A great all-arounder – $102,400
Audi is a brand known for making great all-around luxury cars that can both do luxury and performance, and the e-Tron GT is just that. The e-Tron GT seems to have had the best initial reception as far as outright design is concerned while the EQS is the most debated one of the three.
The interior of the e-Tron GT looks like an interior you’d find in most Audi models which is both a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing is that it’s not over the top and it oozes quality. You are going to find hard-press buttons in the e-Tron’s cabin, and that’s not something you can say about the other two.
However, some might find the interior a bit dull looking, especially when you consider that most EV’s these days are trying to reinvent the interior. As far as range is concerned, the e-Tron GT falls short when compared to the other two.
If you are planning to use your car as a daily commuter and charge it through a wall-charger overnight, this should not be an issue.
FAQ Section
Does it make sense to buy an EV in 2022?
EVs are slowly but surely becoming the next big thing in the automotive industry. However, EVs are still too expensive for mass use and we are not prepared for all the energy requirements to power up thousands or even millions of EVs on a daily basis.
Even so, buying an EV in 2021 does make sense if you are able to completely utilize the platform which means being able to charge the car every day. If you can’t do so or you tend to travel hundreds of miles regularly, it’s better to skip an EV for now.
Is the Porsche Taycan better than the EQS, the e-Tron GT, and the Model S?
The Porsche Taycan is extremely similar to the e-Tron GT which means that these two are rather similar. However, the Taycan does offer more as far as both technology and speed are concerned. Porsche makes some of the best sports cars on the planet and the Taycan is one of them.
It’s safe to say that the Taycan is a sportier experience, but it can’t match the Tesla for convenience for the EQS for luxury.
Are electric SUVs better than electric sedans?
It depends on your perspective as that is likely going to be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing which EV you like the most. While SUVs are indeed more practical and better to see out of, they are heavier than sedans are and that’s a huge issue considering that EVs are heavy even as small hatchbacks.
As such, sedans tend to offer more range and a more serene cabin with better build materials and a much more dynamic experience.
