The Mercedes EQS is one of the most exciting EVs to come out in the last year or two because it offers the highest level of luxury currently available in an EV. The EQS is so lavish and serene that it easily rivals the legendary S-Class for both comfort and luxury.

Thanks to a lovely-looking MBUX Hyperscreen, the EQS feels like the most technologically advanced car on the market. Given the fact that the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system is one of the easiest ones to use besides also offering a ton of functionality, it’s rather logical to consider the EQS even over the S-Class.

The EQS was mildly criticized for costing a lot more than the Tesla Model S without offering any superior performance credentials. However, this seems to have changed because Mercedes has just released the brand-new EQS 53 AMG+ which is set to be both luxurious and exciting to drive.

The EQS 53 AMG+ offers up to 750hp through the boost function for only a short period of time in order to preserve the charge and keep the temperature down. On a day-to-day basis, you will always be able to exploit 650hp which means that the EQS AMG is most definitely worth it as the most luxurious EV on the planet.

The newly released EQS 53 AMG is the fastest Mercedes EV you can buy right now because it offers a dual motor setup with 650-750hp depending on the driving environment. This enables the 53 AMG to reach 60mph from a standstill in a claimed 3.4 seconds.

The EQS is a more spruced up version of the regular EQS which means that it makes the EQS platform as luxurious as the EQS580 and as fast as a true AMG ought to be. Mercedes has not yet confirmed that they are planning to make a top-of-the-line 63 AMG version, but it seems like they might in the future because this model is not called the 63.

Mercedes has not yet released the pricing details for the 53 AMG but the model should easily cost more than $180,000 without any options. The AMG version also comes with a plethora of AMG features such as AMG wheels, sportier exterior, sports seats, AMG sports steering wheel, AMG drive modes, and dedicated AMG performance software.

As previously mentioned, one of the biggest gripes with the EQS was the fact that it was never all that exciting considering the price. The exterior design of the base 450+ and 580 models was a mixed bag because it looks a bit out of place, not fitting for a luxury car or a performance car.

However, the AMG version certainly looks way better than the base model, and because AMG makes some of the most entertaining cars to drive, the EQS should also back the styling up with lots of AMG goodies that should make the EQS more competitive as far as performance EVs are concerned.

The EQS AMG 53 offers a more rear-biased driving experience, a more dynamic chassis, and tweaked bearing and rear axle components which should make the car more fun to drive. The car also comes with lots of AMG software such as “Race Start” and all sorts of performance data and analysis tools.

Either way, the EQS AMG 53 is a definite upgrade over the regular EQS models both inside and out and should be considered if you want a relatively fast and most comfortable EV on the market.

Mercedes EQS 53 AMG+ – Why skipping the EQS 53 AMG is a good idea

At the moment the EQS AMG 53 is the most dynamic Mercedes EV on the market, but Mercedes could quite potentially come out with an even more powerful and faster AMG 63 model. This is rather unclear at the moment, but if they do that they are likely going to target Porsche Taycan Turbo S, e-Tron GT RS, and Tesla Model S Plaid customers.

However, does it make any sense to buy a performance EV anyway because they are mostly fun to drive in a standing line? This eventually becomes not all that exciting and you are left with a $50k+ price upgrade for a similar car.

Calling any EV a performance EV is rather stretching it too far because the EQS 53 AMG weighs almost 6000 pounds which is the same as a Ford F-150. Furthermore, being able to swallow a $180k-$220k price tag for a car that can hardly rival the majority of premium performance EVs on the market is a difficult task.

Why should I buy the EQS AMG over the regular EQS?

You should buy the AMG version if you are one of those who think that the regular EQS model is a bit too slow and too boring. There is no getting around the fact that the AMG version both looks and performs better than both the EQS 450+ and the 580.

Why should I buy the regular EQS over the AMG EQS?

You should buy the regular EQS model if you are primarily interested in luxury and range. The AMG EQS model can travel 60 miles less on a full charge when compared to the EQS 580 which is enough to make a difference.

Furthermore, the regular EQS costs a lot less money while offering 90% of what the AMG version offers. It may be a better idea to opt for a fully equipped EQS 580 than it is to opt for the AMG version because you will spend a whole lot less money for a fairly similar car.

What is the best performance EV on the market?

Even though the Tesla Model S Plaid is the fastest EV performance sedan on the market it still is not as fun to drive as both the e-Tron RS GT and the Taycan Turbo S. The Rimac Nevera is the fastest car in existence, but the second-fastest 0-60mph EV is currently the Plaid.

Even so, the Plaid does not offer a competitively dynamic experience through the corners and that’s why you should focus your attention mostly on the Taycan and the e-Tron GT if you can’t swallow the multi-million dollar price tag of the Rimac Nevera.
