The Mercedes Benz AMG badge has always been reserved for the most capable and desirable Mercedes models that combine performance and luxury like no other. The C63 first came out for the back in 2007 and it features a thunderous 6.2L V8 that produced around 450hp and is widely regarded as one of the best-sounding Mercedes models of all time.
This became the recipe for all future C63 models, but each generation improved over the last one. The previous generation C63 uses a 4.0L BiTurbo V8 with 500hp+, but the very latest C63 is an entirely different type of car. So, if you want to know all about the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63, be sure to stick around and find out!
For starters, the new C63 AMG features a revised version of the engine you’d typically find in the entry-level AMG, the A45. However, the C63 also gets an electric powertrain which boosts power substantially but lacks the noise we all know and love. The C63 also weighs a lot more now and is a four-wheel-drive car as well.
It does retain all the luxuries, and it is larger and more advanced than ever. However, AMG purists are not sold on the idea of downsizing from a V8 to a 4-cylinder hybrid as that makes the C63 an entirely different proposition as a whole.
2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 – The Powertrain
As mentioned in the beginning, the new C63 features a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine which sparked a lot of controversies online. This engine offers 476hp which is rather insane for a 2.0L 4-cylinder, but that is not all because the new C63 AMG also gets an electric motor sourced from the ludicrous 4-door AMG GT which adds an additional 204hp which brings the total power up to 680hp, and 752lb-ft.
This is as much as 170hp more than its main rival, the BMW M3 which is quite a lot. 0-60mph time is under 3.5 seconds which is thanks to the new 4MATIC+ AWD borrowed from the GT 63 AMG 4-door. One obvious benefit of a 4-cylinder hybrid over a V8 is that it can return up to 33MPG which is also insane for a 680hp AMG car.
You can also drive the new C63 AMG in electric mode alone for up to 8 miles which is also rather useful. This powertrain is mated to the well-known Mercedes AMG Speedshift transmission. All in all, a V8 is what makes a C63, but Mercedes hopes that 680hp will be enough for you to forget about the V8 sound entirely.
2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 – Design and Driving
Design-wise, the new C63 looks in line with all the other AMG models today which means that it features a large Panamericana front grille, large intakes at the front, slightly widened front wheel arches, and a few additional touches such as a quad exhaust setup, large wheels, large calipers, and a brand-new hood scoop. The interior is as lavish as in the regular C-Class but is now cladded with carbon and Alcantara.
The driving experience is agile enough, but you certainly do feel the extra weight over the previous C63. AMG tried to do whatever they could to mask that weight and they do manage that, but fast swooping corners are a dead giveaway. Besides that, the C63 is equipped with a relatively livable suspension for daily driving.
2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 – Reliability and Common Issues
As far as reliability is concerned, we can’t say anything yet about the new C63 AMG as it just came out and is way too fresh for a proper reliability assessment. We can say that the C63 is now a lot more complex than before which can be a gateway for certain issues.
Either way, we will have to wait and see. We do need to mention that Mercedes had little to no serious issues with this powertrain in the A45AMG, but the added electrical motors could play a difference.
2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 – Value and Practicality
We can expect the C63 AMG to start at around $85,000 which is about $5,000 more than the entry-level M3 and almost $10,000 more than the Audi RS5 Sportback. Higher-end E-Performance 680hp models will start even more than that.
Practicality is mostly the same as with the regular C-Class which means that the C63 is spacious both front and back with a sizable trunk. With all the safety features and assistance systems, the C63 AMG E-Performance is surely going to be really easy to drive and live with.
FAQ Section
Is the new 2023 Mercedes C63 AMG better than the 2022 C63?
The 2023 Mercedes C63 AMG is certainly a lot more powerful and capable, but as far as driver excitement is concerned, we are yet unable to tell. Lap times are going to be much better, 0-60mph is going to be a lot better, and technology is much better, but is that enough to justify downsizing to literally half of the previous engine?
If you are into fast cars and you want the best quarter mile times, the new C63 is better, but if you want an exciting drive with a thunderous V8 sound, previous generations of the C63 are better.
When can I buy the 2023 C63 AMG?
The 2024 C63 AMG is going to be available for sale by the end of 2022 while most customers will get their cars in 2023. It is worth the wait as the new C63 is also going to be available in the Mercedes AMG Edition 1 package which only comes with the first C63 AMG models out of the factory.
Is the 2023 Mercedes C63 AMG better than the 2023 BMW M3?
The BMW M3 features a well-known BMW M inline V6 which may not be as powerful as the C63 engine but is certainly a lot more exciting. However, both of these cars are excellent and your purchasing decision is likely going to be decided depending on your badge loyalty.
