The Mercedes Benz AMG GT is now at the end of its lifeline and is slowly being replaced with the brand-new Mercedes SL AMG. However, the AMG GT is still a great car as it offers all the state-of-the-art technologies from a performance and a luxury point of view.
On the other hand, the Audi R8 is also a fairly old car now, especially when you consider that it is one of the last naturally aspirated big-engine cars. Performance-wise, the AMG GT Black Series is a lot faster and more capable than the range-topping R8 Performance.
Even the AMG GT, GT R, and GT R Pro models are all able to leave the R8 in the dust at most race tracks around the world. Design-wise, the Audi R8 takes it as there is something inherently more special about a mid-engine supercar.
The Audi R8 sounds better and it also offers a driving experience that can not be matched by any other car than the Lamborghini Huracan. On the other hand, the AMG GT is a bit more ordinary as many cars utilize the 4.0L BiTurbo V8.
2022 Mercedes AMG GT – A Mercedes 2-seater hot rod racer
The 2022 Mercedes AMG GT comes in a few different variants even including a 4-door luxury sedan. The 2-door coupe can be had in either standard AMG GT form or the more performance-oriented AMG GT R models. At the top of the AMG GT food chain sits the ridiculous AMG GT Black Series that costs a ludicrous $325,000.
All AMG GT models come with the 4.0L BiTurbo V8 with up to 730hp in the Black Series. The AMG GT looks aggressive, low to the ground, and has lots of road presence. Interior-wise, the AMG GT offers all the state-of-the-art gadgets and features you’d expect from a Mercedes.
Practicality-wise, it is a bit better than the R8 but cars such as these are not bought for practicality and efficiency. The GT feels wilder to drive as it is strictly a rear-wheel-drive car. A fast-shifting dual-clutch gearbox is available and is on par with the S-Tronic found in the R8.
All in all, the AMG GT is a great car as it is exciting, it looks good and it sounds nice. The best one to get is the AMG GT R in the signature Mercedes Beast of the Green hell green as that color is already iconic.
2022 Audi R8 – A true supercar for everyday
The Audi R8 is a unicorn as it still offers a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 that is leagues above the 4.0L found in the AMG GT. The V10 sounds glorious and it offers a completely predictable and linear power delivery without any lag whatsoever.
The R8 tops out at 640hp and you can opt for either a rear-wheel-drive detuned variant or a Quattro 640hp Performance model. Design-wise, the R8 looks more special than the AMG GT because it is a true mid-engine supercar that looks and sounds like a million dollars.
Interior-wise, the R8 is also state-of-the-art because it comes with Audi’s industry-leading virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster, high-quality materials, and lots of interior space. The Audi R8 is often referred to as the best daily-able supercar which means that it can be used in town, on track, and the highway.
The R8 is a dying breed type of car as we are never going to get a naturally aspirated V10. As such, the R8 is going down in history as one of the last true supercars.
Conclusion – The Audi R8 is better, but the AMG GT is faster
Even though the AMG GT is one of the best 2-seater sports cars on the market right now, the R8 is something else. A naturally aspirated V10 in 2022 feels unreal and because of this, the R8 takes the cake between these two.
The R8 also looks nicer and more special as it is a mid-engine supercar while the AMG GT utilizes a more ordinary front-engine, rear-wheel-drive supercar platform. The AMG GT sounds great, but the R8 sounds better.
The R8 offers more interior space while also offering a more linear power band which makes it predictable and confident inspiring both on track and on a winding road. It’s difficult to pick out a winner as both of these are amazing, but the V10 found in the R8 deserves all the glory.
FAQ Section
Is the Mercedes AMG GT more expensive than the Audi R8?
The base model AMG GT costs around $100,000 while the base model R8 costs $143,000. The range-topping Audi R8 Performance convertible costs $209,000 while the range-topping AMG GT Black Series costs $325,000.
As such, it’s rather obvious that the AMG GT is a more expensive car at the very top end because the AMG GT Black Series is a limited edition track-focused performance car that is designed and built to spend its time at the legendary Nurburgring track.
Is Audi going to offer a new R8 soon?
Audi is no longer able to offer a naturally aspirated V10 because the emissions regulations simply don’t allow that to happen. However, Audi says that they are indeed going to offer the successor to the R8, but one that is going to be 100% electric.
This caused chest pains to many Audi Sport enthusiasts, but the reality of designing an R8 with a 6 or even a 4-cylinder is only going to destroy the R8’s legacy. Electric powertrains are the future and Audi is planning to capitalize the R8 name with a pair of electric engines.
Is the new Mercedes SL better than the AMG GT?
The new Mercedes SL is a true next-gen Mercedes car because it offers the next step in AMG performance. However, I am not convinced about the SL as it is more of a grand tourer than a performance car.
I do believe that AMG is planning to eventually reveal a true successor to the AMG GT and the SLS AMG as Mercedes is so keen on rivaling the 911, and let’s face it, a soft-top 2-seater grand tourer SL is not able to do that.
