History of the Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift was sold in many markets since 1983 as a rebadged Suzuki Cultus. However, in 2004, it become its own model, and the Suzuki Swift Sports was also born. In September 2005, Suzuki introduced the Sport version of the new Swift in Japan, and in September 2006, the model was launched in most European markets. 

In July 2008, Suzuki Germany introduced a limited edition of Swift Sport referred to as N’Style Rally to pay tribute to Suzuki’s Group N Junior World Rally Championship car and only limited to 500 units. The most recent Suzuki Swift Sport was introduced at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. 

The 2017 Suzuki Swift Sport model features a 1.4-liter turbocharged K14C Boosterjet engine shared with the Vitara S. The engine delivers up to 138 bhp and 170 lb-ft of torque.

It is also vital to note that Suzuki introduced a limited edition of Swift Sport for the Dutch market only. This edition was known as Swift Sport Katana and it was launched in 2019. When it comes to looks, the latest Suzuki Swift Sport looks elegant and appealing. Some of the exceptional exterior features include 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels, a huge gaping grille, two large exhausts, and some faux carbon fiber trims.

Whilst the interior might look great, it is also characterized by low-end scratchy plastics that spoil faster. It also comes with a standard 7-inch touchscreen and standard-fit Sat Nav. Overall, this car offers good value for its money compared to its rivals. 


The Suzuki Swift Sport has multiple engine options that determine how the car performs. Suzuki offers petrol, diesel, and hybrid engines. The 1.4-liter turbo engine delivers up to 138.1 hp and 169.6 lb-ft of torque. It can also accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 9.1 seconds with a top speed of up to 130 mph.

While the Suzuki Swift Sport is a compact and small city car, it is quite comfortable and can accommodate up to five people. Tall people may not be very comfortable, as the seats are somewhat cramped. 

Despite featuring a sizeable trunk space of up to 265 liters, this space is still small as some of its rivals like the VW Polo GTI with 303 liters and Hyundai i20 with 352 liters offer more space. Nonetheless, the cargo space can be added by folding the rear seats. 


The Suzuki Swift Sport may not be outstanding when it comes to interior materials and cabin space, but it makes up for that with fantastic safety features. Some of the standard safety features that have been included in this ride are curtain airbags, traffic sign recognition, cruise control, lane-keeping steering, a rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limiter, and a tire pressure monitor.
