Common problems with Citroën ë-C4

Citroën ë-C4 problems

The Citroën ë-C4 is a small family crossover designed to offer space, technology, and safety throughout the range. The ë-C4 is the electric variant of the C4 and is slowly becoming the most popular one out of them all. In this article, we are going to go through all the common problems with Citroën ë-C4 and tell you what you need to look out for if you are interested in buying one.

For starters, the ë-C4 is way too fresh for us to properly assess if it is a reliable car or not. However, owners are starting to come out with certain issues, all of which we are going to discuss in this very article. For starters, Citroën recalled almost 9,000 vehicles including the ë-C4 due to certain rear suspension system problems.

Other issues include problems with the steering system, the seatbelts, and with the A/C. We also need to mention certain equipment issues which can hamper your overall ownership experience.  All in all, we will have to wait a while before there is enough information out there about the ë-C4, only then will we be able to tell you more.

Either way, the ë-C4 is an electric car and EVs tend to be more reliable than their combustion engine counterparts. As such, we can expect the ë-C4 to be a really good car overall as is the case with all the other Stellantis-based EVs.

Citroën ë-C4 – Rear suspension issues

According to Citroën, the ë-C4 has a manufacturing defect in which the rear coil springs and their mounts can come loose and fall off the car completely. This prompted Citroën to recall more than 9,000 ë-C4 models as these issues could potentially result in accidents. The recall consisted of taking the car back to the dealer where they will replace the coils and their brackets in 30 minutes or so.

This is not all that surprising as many new cars go through a whole host of recalls before they are 100% ready for the road. The fact of the matter is, the ë-C4 has only had a single recall by now which is better than most cars from this segment.

Citroën ë-C4 – Steering system issues

If you notice your steering becoming really heavy, but there are no warning lights that come with that, chances are that your electric power steering system is to blame. These issues are really common on regular Citroën C4 models and it seems like the ë-C4 is also relying on the same steering system.

The electric motor that controls the system is not the most reliable one and is thus really expendable. Moreover, the power steering system in many newer models can easily be affected by various exterior contaminants such as dirt, grime, and road debris.

Citroën ë-C4 – Seat belts issues

The Citroën ë-C4 seems to be suffering from certain seatbelt-related issues, some of which can result in significant safety hazards. A few owners complained that the seatbelts refuse to lock into place while moving forward which means that your seatbelts will not hold you in place in an event of a crash.

This is, of course, an ongoing issue so we will have to wait and see if anything comes of it. Either way, seat belt problems tend to cause recalls across the board for most brands.

Citroën ë-C4 – Issues with the A/C

The A/C system on the ë-C4 and the C4 in general is known to suffer from not being able to select a certain temperature and hold it there. Owners have said that turning on maximum cooling didn’t result in the car being cooled down as effectively as it should be.

It’s the same story when it comes to maximum heating as the car takes a long time before actually warming the car up. Be that as it may, issues such as these are usually caused by thermostat issues or issues with certain sensors which don’t send the proper data to the car’s brain.

Citroën ë-C4 – Equipment issues

We are all aware that the ë-C4 is not a luxury car, but it sometimes experiences issues that aren’t common on any type of car. For starters, the wipers are prone to breaking which can significantly lower your visibility while it’s raining. As per one owner, these issues happen to both the front and the rear wipers.

The tiny little switch used to open the trunk is also prone to breaking which means that it will have to be replaced. Certain creaks coming from the front doors are also reported, but these are likely due to worn-out door seals.

However, the ë-C4 costs more than what you’d expect a Citroën family car to cost. This is because the ë-C4 truly is a much better car than previous Citroën family cars from this segment, and because it is powered by an electric motor and a battery.

Is the Citroën ë-C4 a good family car?

Citroën designed the ë-C4 to primarily be a really good family car, and that is rather apparent the moment you step inside one. For starters, it is a 5-star safety-rated car which means that it offers substantial crash protection from both the hardware and the software front.

Moreover, we also need to mention that it comes with loads of family-friendly features such as easy entry, lots of storage space, easy-to-reach IsoFix mounting points, and USBs for the entire family.

Can I buy the Citroën ë-C4 in the USA?

Citroën left the US market back in the 1970s because they couldn’t compete with US domestic automakers as European cars come with higher price tags in the US due to taxation and other associated costs. This is why Citroën left, and they aren’t planning on coming back anytime soon.

As such, you can’t buy the ë-C4 in the US because you can’t buy a new Citroën in the US at all as no new Citroën models are being sold in the US.
