2023 Ford Edge vs 2023 Toyota Sequoia

2023 Ford edge

It’s safe to say that the 2023 Ford Edge is a large SUV, but most people wouldn’t place it in the full-size SUV segment which is keener to the Ford Expedition. On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia has always been a full-size SUV, even with its very latest iteration. Crosshoping between these two is actually quite often which is why we are going to compare these two in a head-to-head matchup.

The 1st generation Ford Edge was introduced for the 2007 model year and was in production until 2015 when it was replaced by a brand-new model. The facelifted 2nd generation Edge came out in 2019 and is still being produced even though the next generation of the Ford Edge is just around the corner.

The Toyota Sequoia has been around for a lot longer than that as the 1st generation of the Sequoia was revealed in 2000 and was succeeded by the 2nd generation of the Sequoia in 2007. The very latest 3rd generation of the Sequoia came out in 2022 and is one of the most competitive Toyota large vehicles out there.

2023 Ford Edge

The 2023 Ford Edge starts off at slightly under $40,000 for the SE mode while the top-spec Ford Edge ST starts at $48,000. The 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with the SE model offers 250hp and 275lb-ft of torque. This engine is able to return around 28MPG on the highway, and 21MPG in the city. The more expensive engine in the lineup is the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 found in the Edge ST

Is Ford F-150 Lightning a good car?

This engine pushes out 335hp and 380lb-ft of torque and offers 19MPG in the city and 25MPG on the highway. Both of these are mated to Ford’s relatively smooth 7-speed automatic. Design-wise, it’s difficult to say that the Edge does not look outdated, especially on the inside. Ford did come out with a 2024 Ford Edge in China, but it has since not been confirmed if this is also going to be the US model.

Space-wise, the Edge is more than good enough as it can be had with three rows of seats and it gets loads of family-friendly features which are sure to be appreciated by many families. The reliability has improved since the car came out which means that it is now a fairly stout automobile.

The driving experience isn’t anything special, but the Edge ST does feel really dynamic for what it is.

 2023 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is a much more expensive SUV as the entry-level SR5 model costs $60,000 without options. The Limited trim comes out at about $66,000, the Platinum pushes that price for an additional $6,000, the Capstone adds another $4,500 on top of that while the top-spec TRD Pro Sequoia starts at an immensely steep $78,000 which is almost twice the money for an entry-level Ford Edge.

The Sequoia powertrain is strictly hybrid which means that it offers a 3.4L turbo V6 paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 437hp and 583lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and an optional AWD system (usually it’s just a RWD system). Thanks to a hybrid powertrain, the Sequoia offers 24MPG on the highway and 21MPG in the city which is more than good enough for its size and weight.

Ford Edge years to avoid – The best and worst years

Design-wise, the new Sequoia looks rather striking both inside and out as it is packed with the latest Toyota premium technology which makes it really enticing. Reliability is likely going to be really good as is the case with all newer Toyota models while the driving experience is fairly subdued.

Practicality is as good as it can be because this is a full-size SUV with three rows of seats, good visibility, and a large trunk.

Conclusion – The 2023 Toyota Sequoia Is the Better Car

The Ford Edge has simply been around for way too long now which means that it has been lapped by most of its competitors. The Sequoia on the other hand comes from a higher class while also being much newer. Indeed, it is significantly more expensive, but the Sequoia is a much better SUV than the Ford Edge in almost every way.

It is more practical, safer, much better equipped, offers better technology, more space, and is a lot more comfortable. The Ford Edge is cheaper but is far behind. The fact of the matter is that Ford is definitely discontinuing the Ford Edge as a newer, more EV-ish SUV is going to take its place soon enough.

FAQ Section

Why is Ford Discontinuing the Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge has been produced at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Canada ever since its first generation. This plant is also the home of the Lincoln Nautilus which seems to follow the same path. The reason why Ford decided to cut these two SUVs is that this production complex is now going to be used for making five new Ford/Lincoln EVs.

Is Ford Mustang Ecoboost a good car?

Ford seems to have made some plans with the Canadian union Unifor which means that the cancellation of the Edge and the Nautilus is partly due to labor negotiations.

Is the 2023 Ford Edge Competitive in 2023?

No, it is not. The Ford Edge feels like a car from a different era even though it is a 2023 model. This means that most people who buy the 2023 Edge have likely gotten a crazy deal on one or aren’t even aware that the automotive industry has progressed as much as it did.

Either way, it’s difficult to compare the 2023 Edge against most of its rivals as all of those have been updated up to three years ago.

 Why Are Crossovers So Popular?

People love crossovers because they offer a raised-up driving position, they tend to be really safe, and they tend to be more modern and futuristic. A crossover is a mixture between a normal car and an SUV which means that it gets pros from both.
