The wind deflector does an amazing job keeping the wind away, even at highway speeds. Another good surprise is the fact that the car is very stable, despite missing a large part of its body, compared to most other convertibles.
BMW M850i: Engine and transmission
Equipped with a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine, the M850i Convertible boasts 523 horsepower under the hood and reaches from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds, and passes a quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds, making it one of the quickest BMWs out there.
Sports mode is available and to our surprise, the ride remains smooth, even on the harshest of corners, bumps and potholes.
Aside from the 4.4-liter M850i, there are other 8 Series convertible engine options, such as the BMW 840i, 3.0 L B58 l6, and the 3.0 L B57 l6 diesel turbocharged engine. All of the engine options come with 8-speed automatic transmission.
BMW 850i: Interior
The interior of the BMW 850i, as you would expect, is sleek and stylish and much less dramatic than the sharp exterior of the vehicle. The leather dashboard is precisely stitched and surrounded by beautiful chrome trim pieces, nicely fitting in the interior’s ambiance.
The infotainment system is the amazing standard 10.3-inch touchscreen that comes with the latest-generation iDrive. Not only is it extremely intuitive and easy to use, but it also has the option to allow gesture control and voice control. This allows you to safely control the features in your car, even while driving.
Apple CarPlay is included with a year-long subscription post-purchase, but Android Auto is still unavailable.
The BMW 850i has a low-seating position for the driver, which makes you quite comfortable on the road, regardless of speed. This makes it very pleasant to drive fast, but limits your field of vision in more than one way.
The headspace and legroom in the front are very ample, even for larger people and taller adults. The rear can fit two people, but it won’t provide them with the legroom they would probably want. It is more suited for a couple of traveling bags than passengers, to be honest. But aren’t most convertibles like that?
The BMW 850i has a larger trunk than most convertibles, which can easily fit a few small suitcases, but it would most likely experience difficulties carrying anything larger.

Compared to models of competitor brands in the segment of large luxury convertibles, the BMW 850i is relatively cheaper than the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet and the Bentley Continental GTC. It is about the same price as the Porsche 911.
An honest verdict would be to put the BMW in the middle of the pack. It brings more driving pleasure than the Bentley and Mercedes, but less than the Porsche.
Talking about luxury, it falls behind the interior of the S-Class and the Bentley Continental, but some would argue that the BMW 850i leads the Porsche in this regard.
It rides a bit firm for a luxury convertible and does not provide the rear space you would get from a normal car, but it comes in with solid build quality and a world-class leading infotainment system.
