Is Ford Mustang Mach-E a good car?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a compact crossover electric SUV that went on sale in December of 2020. The Ford Mustang Mach-E represents the very first EV venture by Ford which set the standards for many Ford EVs to come. The Mustang Mach-E is certainly an interesting prospect for future EV owners, but is Ford Mustang Mach-E a good car?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a really good car because it takes an iconic name and brings it into the future. Ford realized that the Mustang brand name holds quite a reputation in the automotive world so they decided to mix it with the two most popular segments in the current automotive climate, crossover/SUVs and electric cars.

The Mustang Mach-E comes with two different battery sizes and three different power configurations. The design is obviously inspired by the iconic Ford Mustang muscle car thanks to strong shoulder lines, a recognizable grille, and a set of rear triple taillights which are the defining aspects of the Mustang design language.

The Mach-E is a relatively reliable car as well, but there are some issues worth talking about. Practicality is also decent thanks to a large second row of seats and a fairly large trunk space as well.

Ford Mustang Mach-E – The powertrain

As mentioned in the beginning, the Mach-E gets two different battery sizes and three different power configurations. The lineup kicks off with the 75.7kWh battery that offers 258hp and 416lb-ft of torque. This version of the Mach-E can do 261 miles on a full charge and the battery can be replenished using a fast 115kW DC charger in about 30 minutes.

The mid-spec model is the one with the 98.8kWh battery with 337hp and 416lb-ft of torque. This is enough for 270 miles of range and fast charge times are also around 30 minutes because this version can use a 150kW DC fast charger. The top-of-the-line Mach-E is the 490hp/612lb-ft Mach-E GT with its 98.8kWh battery and a fast charge time of 30 minutes.

You can get the Mach-E with either a RWD or an AWD system depending on the model you go for and if you get the extended range 98.8kWh battery package. The GT can do 0-60mph in about 3.8 seconds and is the fastest Mach-E you can buy.

Ford Mustang Mach-E – Design and chassis

The Ford Mustang Mach-E design language is based on the fact that it is an electric crossover/SUV version of the Ford Mustang. This means that the car utilizes a coupe-ish silhouette with strong shoulder lines, a recognizable Mustang grille, and a pair of triple taillights. The interior is also modeled after the Mustang GT which makes the car feel sporty and relatively luxurious as well.

The driving experience is nothing like the Mustang GT, but it does get a move on. Thanks to a low center of gravity, the Mach-E stays surprisingly flat through the corners and it feels better to drive than most combustion engine crossover/SUVs out there.

Ford Mustang Mach-E – Reliability and common issues

When it comes to reliability, the Mach-E certainly had a rough start, but things are ironing out quite a bit during production. Because EVs are inherently more reliable than combustion engine cars, the Mach-E can now be considered a relatively reliable car.

Is Ford F-150 Lightning a good car?

The most common Ford Mustang Mach-E issues are related to the batteries, the equipment, driver assistance safety systems, the charging system, and the app that comes with the car. The good news is that Ford is actively trying to fix many of these issues because they are software-related, however not all of them are.

Ford Mustang Mach-E – Value and practicality

The entry-level Select model starts at $44,000, the Premium model starts at $49,000, the California RT.1 starts at $53,000, and the Mach-E GT starts at $62,000. The Premium model seems to be the best pick of the bunch according to sale charts because it comes with everything you need.

Practicality-wise, the Mach-E is really good because it comes with lots of seating space, especially in the rear. Headspace might be a bit compromised due to a sloping roofline, but the legroom is class-leading. The trunk space is also accommodating thanks to a hatchback tailgate.

FAQ Section

Should I buy the Ford Mustang Mach-E?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with everything you need to kick off your EV journey. The 98kWh battery offers great range, the car is strong enough, it is incredibly safe, it drives well, and it is fairly practical. Moreover, the car gets all the features you’d ever want from a state-of-the-art EV which means that the Mach-E certainly is a good car to buy.

Standard battery range models could be a bit short on outright range, but fast charging times should easily be able to satisfy your commuting needs. Longer distance journeys are a bit tricker, but that is the case with all EVs these days.

Why did Ford make the Mustang Mach-E?

Ford is one of the most dominant automakers out there, especially in the US. The Mustang brand name is as strong as the Ford badge itself and Ford thought that combining the iconic Mustang with an EV powertrain should introduce Ford into the EV era.

As such, they combined the most popular aspects of the automotive industry by developing a crossover/SUV with an electric powertrain. They slapped a Mustang badge onto it, and it immediately became one of the most talked-about cars when it came out.

How fast is the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?

The Mach-E GT is the fastest and most capable Mach-E model because it gets a larger battery and 490hp. This is enough for the GT to do 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 124mph. The Mach-E GT can do the quarter-mile in less than 13 seconds, more specifically, 12.5 seconds which is indeed a really good number.

Given the fact that the Mach-E GT is an electric car, it simply can’t match Tesla Performance models and many European luxury EVs, but no one can say that a 3.8 second 0-60mph time is not enough. For a spot of context, the 2022 V8 Mustang GT can do 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds.
