What is the fastest family car?

Family cars are not what they used to be. Having enough space for 5 or more passengers, and loads of cargo space was a challenge decades ago, nowadays lots of family cars can easily go over 200mph in great comfort and style.

Probably the fastest family car out there is the upcoming Koenigsegg Gemera. This multi-million dollar Swedish hypercar comes equipped with child seat anchors and an engine with upwards of 1700 horsepowers.

Other family cars such as the Audi RS6, Mercedes E63 AMG, or the BMW M5 are also great family haulers, and they can reach absurd 0-60mph times. The Ferrari GTC 4-Lusso and the Bentley Flying Spur are both 200mph+ capable 4-seater cars that are tailored for family use.

If you want an EV, the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo S are both great rapid family sedans. Other EVs such as the Audi E-Tron GT, Tesla Model X, and the Mercedes EQS are also fairly fast, but not as fast as the Model S and the Taycan.

Koenigsegg Gemera

The Koenigsegg Gemera is the very first car of its kind. No other manufacturer ever has successfully managed to develop a spacious 250mph family car. Koenigsegg calls the Gemera a first Mega-GT mostly due to upwards of 1700hp or 1.27 MW.

The Gemera costs a few million dollars and the production numbers are only a handful, but only a few lucky customers will be able to experience what the fastest GT ever built feels like. The power comes from a 2.0L Koenigsegg Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG) 3-cylinder engine with 2 turbochargers driving the front axle.

The best Audi model for a family

This engine is rated at around 600hp, but the rear wheels are being propelled by three electric motors, altogether the combined output is an astonishing 1724hp and a jaw-dropping 3500 Nm of torque. Koenigsegg says that this 1700hp monster is actually more efficient than most other 4-cylinder engines thanks to lots of fuel-saving technologies.

Only 300 Gemeras are to be sold, and the final price is not yet revealed. But it’s safe to say that the Gemera is 100% the fastest family car ever produced, and one of the fastest production cars in general.

The German trio

It’s rather unfair to talk about fast family cars without mention BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. And the Audi RS-6, BMW M5, and the Mercedes E63 AMG are the three best family cars from each brand. All three of these are similarly sized and priced, and choosing one over the other is mostly dependant on your favorite brand.

The Audi RS-6 is a station wagon or an estate as Brits like to call them. The RS6 features a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with 600hp which is capable of reaching 0-60mph in around 3 seconds. The top speed is around the 190mph mark, but the comfort, interior, and cargo space are unmatched by the M5 and the E63.

Speaking of the M5, the M5 is probably the fastest car in the trio with a 620hp V8 twin-turbo engine. The M5 and the E63 are fairly similar when it comes to acceleration as both reach 60mph in under 3 seconds. It’s also worth mentioning that the E63 can be had in an estate form, and the M5 is only limited to a sedan.

What is the best Mercedes for a family?

All three of these German monsters are amazing, and choosing one over the other is extremely hard. But the Audi RS-6 seems like the best family car option out of the trio thanks to its increase in interior and cargo space and a slightly more comfortable ride.

Fast family EVs

The fast family EV segment is only beginning, and already we have a fairly heated rivalry between the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the Tesla Model S Performance. Both of these two electric sedans reach 60mph in less than 2.5 seconds which makes them incredibly fast.

The Taycan is a bit more expensive, but it also offers a higher quality interior, better design, and a better driving experience. The Tesla Model S is indeed an impressive car, but the Model S is nowhere near the Taycan.

Best fast luxury family cars

If you want a 200mph 4-seater car, the Ferrari GTC-4 Lusso and the Bentley Flying Spur are your only two options. The Ferrari offers only 2 doors though, while the Bentley offers 4 doors. The Ferrari offers a screaming naturally aspirated V12 engine with almost 700hp, and the Flying Spur can be had with a W12 turbo with 635hp.

Both of these two are amazing but go for the Ferrari if you love a more exciting sports car feeling as it is primarily a rear-wheel-drive 4-seater version of the Ferrari F12. The Bentley Flying Spur is a more grown-up experience tailored towards luxury and comfort, not as capable as the GTC4 Lusso, but way more chilled.

FAQ Section

Are SUVs better family cars than sedans?

Not really, SUVs are only better for off-roading. Even though they are bigger, they usually don’t offer any significant space increases. They are less efficient, a lot larger and harder to maneuver, and almost always not as comfortable.

  Cars with the least depreciation

That’s not to say that SUVs are bad family haulers, they just are not as good as some sedans are. That being said, if you prefer the SUV platform, or you live in the countryside, there are lots of great family SUVs to choose from.

What is the fastest accelerating family car?

The fastest accelerating family car is probably the Koenigsegg Gemera with its 1.9 second 0-60 time. It’s actually unbelievable that cars are reaching these absurd levels of performance. It makes you wonder if a  special driver’s license is necessary to pilot such a beast.

The upcoming Tesla Model S Plaid is also expected to be the fastest accelerating Tesla, and judging by the way EVs are being developed, a sub 2-second 0-60mph time might even become a standard in a few years.

What makes a good family car?

A good family car has to be large, safe, comfortable, affordable, easy to maneuver, packed with tech, spacious and great for long-distance journeys. Pretty much every car listen here is all of the above except for the affordability aspect.

But if I had to choose the best, not necessarily the fastest family car out of all of the cars listen here, I’d choose the RS6 any day of the week. The RS6 does cost a lot of money, but when you consider how much the Ferrari or the Bentley cost, the RS6 seems somewhat of a bargain.
