The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 is a PHEV version of the Peugeot 3008 which was first introduced back in 2008. The Hybrid4 model came later in 2012 and was the world’s very first mass-produced diesel hybrid. The 3008 Hybrid4 is backed by a rather smaller 13.2kWh battery, but it does make the car more efficient than the normal 3008.

The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 is currently backed by a 1.6L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine that pushes out 197hp and 221lb-ft of torque which is a decent number for a Peugeot. However, this engine is also mated to an electric engine which means that the combined power output of the 3008 Hybrid4 is 300hp and 358lb-ft of torque.

The older 3008 Hybrid4 used to have a diesel hybrid engine with much less power which didn’t really make too much sense for a hybrid. This powertrain is mated to an efficient and relatively seamless 8-speed automatic transmission with FWD.  This is enough to push the Hybrid 4 from 0-60mph in about 5.9 seconds which is a brisk time for such a large car.

As far as efficiency is concerned, you can expect the Hybrid 4 to return about 181MPG combined if everything goes according to plan. However, the real-world MPG is much worse than that and it usually hovers around 40MPG.

The design of the 3008 Hybrid4 is in line with the rest of the Peugeot lineup which means that the Hybrid4 looks modern and is a much better-looking car than its predecessor. The new 3008 actually looks like an SUV as opposed to an MPV of some sort which was the case for the previous models. The interior is really attractive as is the case with most Peugeot models today.

Driving-wise the Hybrid4 does not really differ from the rest of the lineup except for the fact that it is quicker. It means that the car is relatively composed and comfortable and does not try to be sporty or dynamic.

The first generation of the Hybrid4 had the most issues, many of which were tied to the diesel engine. The 2nd generation of the Hybrid4 was a start improvement while the 3rd gen Hybrid4 is by far the best. Peugeot did learn how to make reliable cars in the past five years as the brand is continuously getting better rankings in most reliability charts.

The most common 3008 Hybrid4 issues are associated with the electrical systems, the A/C, the EV range, and transmission, and the DPF filter for the 1st gen Hybrid4. Problems with the EV range can become a big issue when the car become of age while electrical issues are a common occurrence, especially for the 1st and 2nd gen of the Hybrid4.

As far as value is concerned, £31,185 – £48,140 is the price you have to pay for a 3008 in general while Hybrid4 models live in the past £40k territory which is a hefty price for a Peugeot. However, most people seem to be satisfied with the 3008 which means that the car is actually a really enjoyable experience overall.

Practicality-wise, the trunk is big, but the opening is fairly narrow. The front seats offer lots of adjustments while the rear seats are spacious, but aren’t spacious enough for three adults to sit comfortably. The car has lots of USB ports and many useful storage areas with great all-around visibility and easy entry.

Why did Peugeot stop making the 3008 Hybrid4 as a diesel?

The reason why Peugeot opted for a gasoline hybrid instead of a hybrid diesel engine is that diesel engines are slowly being discontinued and because most cars these days are equipped with gasoline hybrid engines. Gasoline engines are not as polluting and are loved by most people due to how they feel to drive.

A small gasoline engine can still produce enough horsepower to power a large car while diesel engines do need more displacement in order to offer similar performance. Moreover, performance is not really something diesel engines are famed for anyway.

Peugeot is indeed retiring all of its diesel engines starting with 2023 as they aim to focus on a cleaner future with just EVs and hybrids. Peugeot made the commitment to be one of the very first large mainstream car brands to completely embrace EVs and this is merely just a pathway to that idea.

Some are sure to miss diesel engines as there are still many benefits to diesel engines, at least from an engineering point of view. Be that as it may, CO2 emissions need to be lowered and the environment needs to win, so that is why diesel engines are going away.

Is the Peugeot 3008 a luxury car?

Given its price tag, some could very well believe that the 3008 Hybrid4 is a luxury car, but in reality, it is far from it. Even though the 3008 offers an abundance of features and technologies, being a luxury car entails much more than that as the overall finish and attention to detail simply aren’t there.
